Updated 30 Oct 2026Figures from 140 saunas we list
Of the 140 saunas we list, 31 plug into a standard 120V outlet, 23 need a dedicated 120V circuit and 86 need a dedicated 240V or 30A circuit. The heater decides which.

Why heaters need different supplies
A standard 120V, 15A household circuit can deliver about 1,800 W, and less is recommended for a continuous load. That's enough for many infrared cabinets. Traditional stoves usually run 4.5 to 9 kW, which needs 240V. Here's how it splits by heating type:

What 240V means for your budget
A 240V sauna needs a dedicated circuit, often hardwired, run by a licensed electrician, and sometimes a permit or panel upgrade. Our installation cost guide has sourced ranges. A plug-in sauna avoids that cost, but check that the outlet isn't shared with other heavy loads.
What works
120V: no new wiring for many infrared cabinets
240V: powers the stove heaters traditional saunas need
Both: the seller's listing states which you need
What to watch
120V: lower power limits size and top temperature
240V: electrician, permit and possibly a panel upgrade
Any: a licensed electrician must confirm your panel
Electrical guidance here is preliminary and doesn't replace a licensed electrician. See Sauna electrical requirements for every sauna's exact connection.
31 of the 140 saunas we list are sold as plug-in for a standard 120V outlet, mostly infrared. An electrician should still check the circuit isn't shared with other heavy loads.
Do traditional saunas need 240V?
79 of the 79 traditional saunas we list need a 240V or 30A circuit.
